Ingredients

Buh-bye chemical palate enhancers and artificial flavours, hello to fresh veggies and meats that are free from hormones and antibiotics!

All our ingredients are carefully chosen and have a purpose and a place. Healthy doesn't have to mean bland – all our treats taste as good as they smell and look. We really are committed to creating healthy, sustainable pet treats without greenwashing.

Coconut flour

Gluten and wheat-free and hypoallergenic (gluten is a very common allergen among pets and some may eventually develop an intolerance to it). Rich in dietary fibre, low in sugar and carbohydrates, high in protein and healthy fats (MCT’s), coconut flour is safe for pets and especially healthy for diabetic or pets with high cholesterol, as it helps to regulate blood sugar levels. It ticks all the healthy boxes!

Ground Flaxseed

Flaxseed is an extremely healthy food because it’s loaded with essential fatty acids like omega-3 and supports a healthy coat and fur, joints, immune system, kidneys and aids with digestion.

Ostrich meat

Ostrich is a rare, sustainable protein source – that's why there are hardly any allergies known against ostrich – which makes it ideal for pets with food allergies and intolerances. We use human-grade ostrich fillet in our treats (not the pet mix) and our free-range ostrich, sourced locally in South Africa, is the most sustainable red meat protein in the world: kg for kg (pound for pound). It's low in fat, cholesterol and calorie contents and very, very tasty!

It also supports rural communities in South Africa, as farming ostrich in rural parts of South Africa has provided a livelihood for local farmers and their families for many generations.

Turmeric

Organic turmeric is a powerful antioxidant, a natural and effective anti-inflammatory and it protects the liver from toxins. It's even used to kill parasites. A natural superfood!

Omega-3 fish oil

Fish oil for dogs and cats supports the health of the skin, coat, joints, kidneys, heart, and immune system. It’s even been shown to aid in more serious problems, like cancer. Fish oil contains two essential fatty acids: EPA and DHA. Both are omega-3 fatty acids that can only be made in a limited capacity in dogs and are even more poorly synthesised in cats.

EPA, one of the two omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil, acts as an anti-inflammatory. It will help with any condition that causes inflammation of the heart, kidneys, skin, and joints—such as arthritis and will ease inflammation due to allergies, and reduce itchy skin and dandruff. This can also be an effective way to potentially decrease the incidence of hot spots on your pet.

Like many fat supplements, it promotes a shiny, healthy coat, and reduces shedding. (For cats, this may also mean fewer hairballs, since your cat won’t pick up as many loose hairs while grooming.) DHA, the other omega-3 fatty acid in fish oil, is important in brain and eye development in puppies and kittens.

Mackerel

Mackerel is full of omega-3 fatty acids and contains a wealth of essential vitamins and minerals. This oily fish is one of the healthiest fish around. It's rich in protein which is perfect for obligate carnivores. It contains very low levels of mercury, as it's fished out of deeper waters than other fish, making it more likely to come from an unpolluted environment, so it’s healthier for your fluff.

Chicken Hearts

A fantastic source of taurine. Taurine is an amino acid (the ‘building blocks’ of proteins) required by the heart, the skeletal muscles, the large intestines, the central nervous system, and pretty much the entire body. Unlike dogs, cats can't produce taurine in their own bodies; rather, they must eat foods (prey) containing taurine to obtain it. Which is why you'll often find a bundle of feathers in your living room and nothing else...

Butternut

It's loaded with powerful and natural antioxidants as well as some natural anti-inflammatory properties that could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and kidney failure. This powerful squash is high in Vitamin A, Vitamin C, fibre and potassium. These vitamins and minerals support the health of your dog’s vision, immune system, colon, muscles and aids digestion. And if that wasn't enough, it's also very low in fat and contains no cholesterol.

Rosemary extract

BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, TBHQ. Being a pet owner (I use the term loosely when it comes to cats), then you probably recognise these names as artificial preservatives that you should avoid in your pet’s food. Fortunately, there are natural preservatives that can do the same things and keep your pet healthier. Gizzls uses rosemary extract – a powerful antioxidant which is able to slow down the oxidisation process that turns fats rancid.

WHAT are adaptogens?

And why do we add them to our treats? Adaptogens are amazing little herbs that bring balance to the body – in humans and in dogs. What’s amazing is that they do this without stimulating or suppressing any body function; they simply balance them.

Balance what, you ask? Depending on the adaptogen, they will balance hormones, balance the immune system and balance physiological responses to stress factors. The right combination of adaptogens increases the body’s ability to cope with external and internal stressors, maintain wellness and maximise health and vitality throughout life.

Pretty impressive for little herbs...
